Delve into the rich mythology and folklore of Ireland
Slí na Sí
On the Loch Bran Trail, you will find the Slí na Sí – the path of the fairies. Delve into the rich mythology and folklore of Ireland and learn about the mysterious characters who feature in our treasured tales. In Irish tales, the Sí are said to live underground in fairy mounds, in hollow hills or even on magical islands. Many believe their world is invisible but they interact with the human world. If you look out of the corner of your eye, you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse, but don’t be fooled into thinking that the Sí are little people, they come in all shapes and sizes. Pick up one of the activity sheets and see if you can decipher the hidden message from the Sí along the way.
The Ogham Alphabet is an early medieval alphabet used primarily to write the Irish language. It was possibly developed as a cryptic form of communication to protect secret messages. Each character of the alphabet is thought to be associated with a particular tree or plant found in Ireland. Explore the Ruachan and Loch Bran trails to discover each letter from the Ogham Alphabet and its related tree or plant.
